Aerial Drone Service For Saype’s “Address Hate” Art Installation in NYC
When the world-renowned French-Swiss artist Saype brought his “Address Hate” initiative to New York City in May 2025, it was more than an art installation, it was a movement.
Through high-end aerial videography, our team at PhotoFlight Aerial Media was honored to be part of this historic project, capturing the magnitude and message of Saype’s eco-responsible land art as it unfolded across New York’s iconic skyline.
Project Details
Project: Saype “Address Hate” Public Art Campaign.
Location: Multiple sites in New York City including Staten Island and Manhattan (notably near the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges).
Deliverables: High/low altitude aerial footage of eco-art installation phases, barge transport, and final piece reveal.
Crew/Equipment: DJI Inspire 2 X7, FPV drone, chase boat coordination, multiple-day deployment with site compliance and safety planning.
This project was a part of our drone services for New York, and our role involved capturing cinematic drone videography over several days across the city. From the early stages of production to the final public reveal, our goal was to showcase the visual scale, complexity, and emotion of Saype’s biodegradable artwork as it unfolded along the New York City shoreline.
An Artistic Mission With a Powerful Message
The “Address Hate” campaign aims to fight digital hate and restore empathy in the public space—through art, education, and civic dialogue. In partnership with the Laterman Family Foundation, the campaign unveiled a breathtaking 530-square-meter biodegradable fresco created directly on the grass near Pier 57, visible to the public during Mother’s Day weekend.
Saype’s piece, ephemeral and profound, combined bold brushwork with poetic symbolism to inspire reflection about unity in a divided digital age. To translate that vision into compelling video, our aerial droning team needed to be precise, responsive, and respectful of the artistic process and regulatory environment.
Complex Multi-Day Operations and Permitting Strategy
To support this high-profile initiative, PhotoFlight Aerial Media developed a detailed four-day operations plan across multiple boroughs:
- May 4–5, 2025: Our flights focused on Staten Island, operating from 15 Murray Hulbert Avenue. Drones were flown within a 400-foot AGL (above ground level) and within a 400-foot radius to capture initial preparation phases.
- May 6, 2025: The most dynamic shoot day, our crew followed the barge carrying the artwork along the water. We maintained strict vertical alignment with a chase boat and remained compliant with restricted airspaces—avoiding no-fly zones like the Statue of Liberty and keeping 400 feet clear of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
- May 8, 2025: Final operations were conducted at Location 4, providing vertical footage above the chase boat and wide visuals of the artwork from a safe and compliant distance.
Our adherence to FAA airspace protocols, coordination with on-site authorities, and efficient execution were key to ensuring uninterrupted documentation while respecting both security restrictions and public safety.
Advanced Equipment & Precision Filming
To deliver cinematic footage worthy of the project's global reach, our drone team deployed the DJI Inspire 2 X7 with Super 35 sensor and interchangeable lens options. This allowed us to produce high-resolution imagery with dynamic depth of field and motion versatility. In addition, FPV drones were used selectively for close-up flyovers and dramatic tracking shots that emphasized the scale and setting of the artwork.
By leveraging both proximity and altitude, we delivered a balance of intimate detail and breathtaking aerial perspective.
Coordinated Timing and Visual Storytelling
What set this shoot apart was the need for narrative cohesion across multiple days and locations. The footage had to tell the story of transformation from creation to transport to unveiling. By staging our flights in sync with Saype’s team and the barge’s movements, we captured consistent lighting and natural transitions between scenes.
The result was a compelling visual timeline that emphasized not only the scale of the artwork but also the symbolic weight of its journey into one of the world’s most iconic cities.
A Project That Elevates Purpose With Precision
Art projects of this magnitude demand technical excellence, logistical planning, and creative alignment. We’re proud to have delivered on all fronts for Saype’s "Address Hate" campaign - an artwork that doesn’t just occupy space but transforms it. Through aerial footage, we were able to elevate that message - literally - and help amplify its impact far beyond NYC.
